Foreigners who live in Yar, share your experiences, pls, what are the bigest complication of living here?

The biggest complication of living here is to be a resident!
To be serious there are only complications that we create ourseves.

Don't walk around at late hours, there might be thugs in the streets.

Is it dangerous to live in Yaroslavl? Is there good water to drink? Are people welcoming of strangers? Will my limited Russian language skills be a problem?

Then my visit will be an adventure. The saddest part of your reply is that the water is not good. I think that good water should be the first priority of a community and it's government.

Water to drink is not a problem - you can drink vodka . But we have bad hot water for taking shower.

There is an English expression: "Stinking drunk". Perhaps this fits? If you drink enough, there are no problems.

Well, I should say that water in Moscow is way worse than ours. So don't worry)))

Yaroslavl is a quite place. Much quieter than many other similar cities. Of coarse, you should be careful with some places in this town, but it's the same scene in whole the world. If you arrive on September, there will be more foreigners, then citizens of Yaroslavl. I don't think you'll need to use your russian-language skills. And water-quality is rather poor. It's not recommended to drink it, but if you do - nothing will happen..... I hope....

I am from St. Petersburg but for the last 6 months I have been living in Yaroslavl. And I must say that it is much safer then St. Pete. I am not afraid to walk outside at 10 pm here while in St. Pete I am afraid to walk even in the middle of the day. People here are very friendly, polite and sincere. There is no panic and stress. Very peaceful place for living!

Russian people are much more friendly to westerners than to themselves. The same Russian who were talking politely to you may be rude to his Russian neighbor. Smiling is not a typical Russian habit, although western smile is not always sincere (westerners are "just used to smile"). Some people love such format smiles - but some Russians do not, people might even be upset if you are smiling wide while walking in the street.
After living some years and reading Buddhist texts, east has some true wisdom - both laughing and suffering are just two sides. One should try to stay neutral, be cool. Not frowning, not smiling, but neutral. Although that is really hard.

I have visited Yaroslavl many times, and I hope I am coming to live there this August/September. I have never had a great problem (I am older and sometimes on the trolleybus the conductor wants me to pay half fare - I must look really old!). I find that, generally, people in Yaroslavl are very friendly, eager to help and not perturbed by the presence of foreigners. And there are some really good restaurants and bars - well, I think so anyway.
